Jetta No.2

Post by Geeman on Mon Mar 08, 2010 11:13 am

Well, I've gone and bought another Jetta. This time it's a fully fledged '91 16v - so I won't have to do any engine swaps or interior trimming this time! (well, I hope not!)

It's not very pretty at the moment and needs some work (and parts) but I think it'll look fairly good once done. It's not a bad colour.

I'm back the the land of the Jettas (where I belong!)

And no... it's not going to be finished for any shows this year! lol

Having checked out the pics, I'm sure you'll have it sorted in time for UD's and have changed the rims two or three times too, ha, ha, ha. Happy jetta mate. Looking forward to seeing it progress. Is it badged a 'GT'?

Yeah... it's badged as a GT (as is my Mk3!) but I've HPI'd it and it's definitely a GTi (not a GT) so someone must have sourced a badge for it from somewhere.

Needs paint on NSR quarter and bottom of drivers door and OSF wing has a scratch on it that needs attention. Couldn't really see down the passenger side to see if it was okay or not.

There's no chance it'll be done this year... especially with the wedding coming up! It's a project for when I've got time... lol

Just need a few 'wheel sales' to happen to fund it and it should be on the road (though not in a painted/pretty state) for late summer I would think.

When VW produced the 'GT', what spec was it? Was it a bit like a 'Driver', a slightly lower spec'd GTI?
PS: How are the wedding plans coming along?

I dunno about the GT thing. This is defo a GTi though... GTi seats, 16v engine, etc...! I HPI'd it to check it was stolen, written off, on finance, etc. Came back clear... so all good.

Found a Jetta locally that will happily donate all the parts I need... so happy days! Going to check it out tonight.

Wedding plans are still ongoing. We've got nearly everything sorted now. It's just the last little finishing touches that cause the stress! It's started in our house already... lol

Nightmare trip home.

Bonnet flew up and got bent.

Strap snapped at the back and the front of the car came off the trailer when we braked. SCAREY! - damaged subframe and rad on the jockey wheel... no other permanent damage apart from my heart as it came out of my mouth!

It's home and on the drive now though. Phew! Tomorrow sees some stripping and cleaning...

So... I've found a weird thing out.

Looked at the sticker in the boot and it's stamped up as a Jetta GT...! It's also LA7U paintcode which is Pearl Grey. Mix the two together and I think I've got quite a rare combination.

Found a website to decode the factory option codes - http://igorweb.org/equidec/Default.aspx

X2B = National sales program Great Britain

1AF = power brakes

3FB = Sun roof

5J4 = Body-colored rear spoiler

4KC = Side and rear windows in heat-insulating glass

4GF = Windshield in heat-insulating glass

3NK = Rear seat bench/backrest, one-piece double folding

1ME = Steering wheel - handy!

8J1 = Hand brake/low brake fluid level warninglight without inscription

8K2 = Daytime driving light mode for urban driving

8M0 = W/o rear window wiper and washer system

8BQ = Halogen headlight for driving on the left

8D7 = 6 speakers (passive)

3D1 = Center console

8TD = Rear fog light for driving on the left

8WD = Integrated front fog light

8F3 = Large side turn signal lights (2,116 mm 2,200 mm) with marker lights

8X1 = Headlight washer system

8U0 = Without additional instruments for distance measurement

1TB = Fuel tank vent line with gravity valve and PVC breather hose

1H1 = Load-sensitive proportioning valve

To me, this sounds like my Jetta was an imported car... maybe?

I have no idea! Thought it might be the glovebox, but there's no sign of anything different with that...

Might have been in the boot...?

Gee, I don't know if this helps or makes things even more confusing, but......................
In PVW this month in the 'Built not Bought' bit at the back there's a Mk2 Jetta GT!
In the blurb it says the following: 'Back in the 80's, GTI Engineering took 50 stock alpine white Mk2 Jettas and put their own touch on them to create the Jetta GT, the result of which are often seen as the pinnacle of the Mk2 Jetta range. But with only 50 having ever been made, finding one isn't an easy job.'

Yeah... saw that. I know the guy that owns it. It's not 'one of those' GT's... thank God - horrible bodykit! lol

I thought that article read as though those were the only GT's that were produced for the UK market? That might support your theory that it's an import?
